IHI Corporation (株式会社IHI), formerly known as Ishikawajima-Harima Heavy Industries Co., Ltd. (石川島播磨重工業株式会社), is a Japanese company which produces ships, aircraft engines, turbochargers for automobiles, industrial machines, power station boilers and other facilities, suspension bridges and other transport-related machinery. IHI’s history extends back to the establishment of Ishikawajima Shipyard, Japan’s first modern shipbuilding facility, in 1853. The company played a key role in Japan’s modernization, including by leveraging its shipbuilding technology in new areas, such as heavy machinery manufacturing, bridge building, plant construction and aero-engine production. In 1960, Ishikawajima Heavy Industries, the successor of Ishikawajima Shipyard, merged with Harima Shipbuilding & Engineering to create Ishikawajima-Harima Heavy Industries. The name IHI Corporation was adopted in 2007 to help strengthen the company’s global brand.

IHI announces it and several domestic partners jointly developed the world’s first one-megawatt-class (see note 1) electric motor (note 2) mounted inside a jet engine tail cone (note 3). This achievement is one fruit of the company’s More Electric Architecture for Aircraft and Propulsion (MEAAP) project. This technological innovation initiative aims to optimize the overall energy management of aircraft systems, including engines, to help cut their carbon dioxide emissions.

IHI, Gentari sign MoU to develop global green ammonia value chain and commercial demonstration of ammonia-powered gas turbine

IHI Corporation (IHI), a Japanese engineering company, and Gentari Hydrogen Sdn Bhd, a wholly-owned subsidiary of PETRONAS’ clean energy arm Gentari Sdn Bhd (Gentari), today announced the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) that will see the two parties deepening their collaboration to further develop the hydrogen industry.

Under this MoU, IHI and Gentari will jointly explore the establishment of a global green ammonia value chain which spans the production, transportation, storage and utilization of green ammonia in Asia Pacific and other areas of mutual interest. Additionally, the parties will also explore progressing the commercial utilization of IM270, a fully ammonia-powered gas turbine, developed by IHI with support from Japan’s New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO). Anticipating commencement by 2026, this commercial demonstration could potentially be the world’s first fully ammonia-powered gas turbine to be deployed.

IHI and Vopak sign MOU for joint study on low-carbon ammonia terminal development and operation

IHI Corporation (IHI) and Royal Vopak (Vopak) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to jointly explore the development and operation of efficient, high value-added ammonia terminals in Japan. IHI and Vopak will furthermore assess a collaboration outside of Japan.

The collaboration focusses on large-scale ammonia storage terminals, strategically positioned for the economical distribution of ammonia. Ammonia plays an important role as a fuel for reducing carbon emissions from thermal power generation and as a hydrogen carrier, both in Japan and abroad. In addition, the study will examine the possibility of streamlining the operation of ammonia terminals to enhance price competitiveness, as well as the conversion and supply of various hydrogen derivatives.

IHI Demonstrates World’s Highest-Capacity Hydrogen Recirculation System for Aircraft Fuel Cells, Delivering Compactness and High Durability

IHI announces today that it has developed and successfully demonstrated an electric hydrogen turbo-blower, a large-capacity hydrogen recirculation unit that achieves the world’s highest hydrogen circulation volume in its class. This equipment was developed for use in aircraft fuel cells, and has succeeded in achieving a large capacity by employing an ultra-high-speed motor with a proprietary gas bearing.

This project is the fruit of collaboration with Akita University and Sanei Kikai Co., Ltd, which manufactures aircraft fuselage parts and manufacturing equipment in Akita Prefecture.
