MSG process plant adds a dash of optimization

Ajinomoto’s process plant in Eddyville, Iowa, which produces monosodium glutamate (MSG), embodies a typical scenario. The facility has about 200 PID control loops, and the support team initially procured a PID loop-tuning software package followed by a plantwide control loop performance monitoring (CLPM) solution to look after these loops. Despite these investments, the team only had bandwidth for the most basic applications. The situation changed when an enhanced support offering introduced by the software vendor, Control Station, empowered the MSG producer to kick their process performance into high gear.

After six months of teaming with the CLPM supplier, approximately half of the facility’s loops were optimized. The site documented notable improvements in overall process stability, energy use and throughput. The size of crystals produced—a proxy for quality—has been maintained at the highest levels. Comprehensive use of the CLPM software’s capabilities and reporting provided better visibility into loops that are trending in problematic directions, so the team can proactively address underlying issues well before they lead to costly unplanned downtime.

Capturing PFAS chemicals for better battery technology

Technology developed at The University of Queensland can remove harmful ‘forever chemicals’ from water so they can be used in renewable batteries.

Researchers at UQ’s Australian Institute for Bioengineering and Nanotechnology have made a filter which quickly and cleanly captures per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). The filter contains a patented sorbent solution that uses an ion-exchange technique to isolate and remove the PFAS particles as the water passes through it.

Having successfully tested a prototype of the PFAS filter in a laboratory, Dr Zhang and Professor Jianhua Guo from UQ’s Australian Centre for Water and Environmental Biotechnology will soon commence pilot testing in Brisbane and the US with $1 million backing from the Advance Queensland Industry Research Projects program.

Optimizing waste handling with interactive AI: Prompt-guided segmentation of construction and demolition waste using computer vision

Optimized and automated methods for handling construction and demolition waste (CDW) are crucial for improving the resource recovery process in waste management. Automated waste recognition is a critical step in this process, and it relies on robust image segmentation techniques. Prompt-guided segmentation methods provide promising results for specific user needs in image recognition. However, the current state-of-the-art segmentation methods trained for generic images perform unsatisfactorily on CDW recognition tasks, indicating a domain gap. To address this gap, a user-guided segmentation pipeline is developed in this study that leverages prompts such as bounding boxes, points, and text to segment CDW in cluttered environments. The adopted approach achieves a class-wise performance of around 70 % in several waste categories, surpassing the state-of-the-art algorithms by 9 % on average. This method allows users to create accurate segmentations by drawing a bounding box, clicking, or providing a text prompt, minimizing the time spent on detailed annotations. Integrating this human–machine system as a user-friendly interface into material recovery facilities enhances the monitoring and processing of waste, leading to better resource recovery outcomes in waste management.

The emergence of cyber or platform-based manufacturing as-a-service is rapidly disrupting the way discrete parts are sourced and manufactured. However, the centralized business model of cyber manufacturing as-a-service platforms raises concerns about data ownership and access control of independent manufacturing suppliers. Contrary to centralized platforms, cyber manufacturing as-a-service aims to connect designers with geographically distributed manufacturers by serving as a broker who matches the query part design requirements with the manufacturing capabilities of candidate suppliers in its network. One of the key challenges in realizing the vision of cyber manufacturing as-a-service is the lack of a computationally efficient method for manufacturing capability search while maintaining data security of the proprietary datasets of the suppliers in the network. In this paper, we propose a federated learning approach that utilizes a deep unsupervised part retrieval model (FL-DUPR) to learn a federated embedding of suppliers’ manufacturing capabilities without directly accessing their proprietary datasets. We demonstrate through two case studies that this approach yields a supplier selection accuracy of 89 % when the manufacturing capabilities of the suppliers do not overlap, and a multi-label supplier selection accuracy of 87 % when there are significant overlaps in the suppliers’ manufacturing capabilities. We also show that our unsupervised learning approach outperforms the baseline supervised learning classification model trained under the same federated learning framework. The results demonstrate the promise of the proposed federated embedding approach for automated identification of the required manufacturing capabilities offered by various suppliers without directly accessing their proprietary data, thus paving the way for a more secure cyber manufacturing as-a-service business model.
